Using meta tags is very important as it can help in getting your blog or site listed higher up in search engine results.  For example, if you do a search for sites about entertainment and movies you'll see there are probably 100,000' s of sites listed.  Yours could be listed on page 2000 and it's more likely that the average everyday internet user won't be looking down the list.  They will probably only look at the first 2 or 3 pages of search engine listings.  You can add meta tags to the HTML of your pages.  This will list your site or blogs title, a short description and keywords to describe what it is.  Like this iwhen search engines crawl through a list of sites under those keywords they can identify yours more easily.
